Francisco SACRAMENTO, August 17, 2000 -- Lottery
officials announced that almost 2 million
winners won in the various categories of
Wednesday's $88 million SuperLotto Plus
draw. The numbers drawn August 16, 2000
were 02, 34, 16, 31, 22, the MEGA number
was 10. One ticket matched all five
numbers plus the MEGA number, winning $88
million and the third largest jackpot in
California Lottery history. Public schools
will receive $50 million from this
jackpot. A winner choosing the cash option would
receive roughly half of the jackpot amount
or $44 million. A winner choosing payments
over 26 years would receive payments of
$2.1 million the first year, graduating to
$4.1 million in the 26th year. The winning ticket was sold at the
Smoke Signals, 2223 Polk Street, San
Francisco, California. The retailer will
receive $440,000 or one half of one
percent of the jackpot. This is the
largest bonus paid to any retailer in
California Lottery history. Twenty-one tickets throughout the state
won the second prize category of $33,517
for matching 5 numbers. Besides the
jackpot winner, eight second prize tickets
were sold in the bay area in the cities of
Benecia, Fairfield, South San Francisco,
Union City, Oakland, San Ramon, Palo Alto
and Santa Cruz. Thirteen other tickets
were sold in San Diego, Norwalk, Los
Angeles, Madera, La Quinta, Granada Hills,
Montebello, Selma, Los Angeles, Studio
City, Pollack Pines and Irvine. Two
hundred and forty-seven tickets won $1,424
by matching four numbers plus the MEGA
number. Other prize categories included the
following: On July 6, 1996, Manuel, Maria and Paul
Xavier won $49 million making them the
largest prize winners from San Francisco.
On April 17, 1991, the largest jackpot in
California Lottery history reached $118.8
million and was won by 10 winning tickets
and 54 winners. Salvador Gonzalez of
Anaheim, California made Lottery history
when he became the highest individual
jackpot winner of $87 million on June 9,
1999. SuperLotto Plus can be played at
approximately 19,000 retail business
establishments around the state. The
SuperLotto Plus draw takes place each
Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m.
Players may purchase tickets until 7:45
p.m. on the night of the draw.
